A ‘House United’
As Abraham Lincoln once said, quoting Jesus, “A house divided against itself cannot stand.”
Sadly, churchgoers in the United States have ushered the Left and the Right to even greater extremes. Extremists in American politics rely on Christians to be the engine that pushes the culture further Right of Left. But isn’t the church called to bring people together? Aren’t we to find ways to come together across difference and live out the glories of neighborly connection?
Regardless of our politics, each of us have a key role to play as Christians—and collectively as a church—as we approach the election.
As part of our Love Your Neighbor campaign, this seminar will be led by Allen Hilton, the founder and executive director of House United (houseunitedmovement.org), a nonprofit initiative that helps groups and churches collaborate across theological and political differences. He believes that religion isn’t inherently divisive, and will offer a new role for the church. He will remind us that Jesus prayed that his disciples might all be one, and this seminar will offer a vision of God transforming the church to be an agent of hope and change in our land.
We’ll hear about the compelling, divine call to listen, collaborate, and build community across differences. In so doing, we become Jesus’ whole body. But we’ll also turn from thoughts to actions, and Allen will offer four paths forward for University Christian Church.
